Superconducting magnesium diboride films on Silicon with Tc0 about 24K grown via vacuum annealing from stoichiometric precursors
Superconducting magnesium diboride films with Tc0 ~ 24 K and sharp transition
\~ 1 K were successfully prepared on silicon substrates by pulsed laser
deposition from a stoichiometric MgB2 target. Contrary to previous reports,
anneals at 630 degree and a background of 2x10^(-4) torr Ar/4%H2 were performed
without the requirement of Mg vapor or an Mg cap layer. This integration of
superconducting MgB2 films on silicon may thus prove enabling in
superconductor-semiconductor device applications. Images of surface morphology
and cross-section profiles by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show that the
films have a uniform surface morphology and thickness. Energy dispersive
spectroscopy (EDS) reveals these films were contaminated with oxygen,
originating either from the growth environment or from sample exposure to air.
The oxygen contamination may account for the low Tc for those in-situ annealed
films, while the use of Si as the substrate does not result in a decrease in Tc

Enhancing the patient involvement in outcomes: a study protocol of personalised outcome measurement in the treatment of substance misuse
Involving patients in treatment is becoming increasingly popular in mental health [Sales & Alves:
Personalized evaluation of psychological treatments: A review of tools and research designs, submitted]. However,
in substance misuse treatment settings, the patient perspective about treatment tends to be overlooked. This has
been cited as a key priority by Orford et al. [Addiction, 103: 875-885, 2008] who included patient feedback about
treatment as one of ten areas requiring an urgent paradigm shift in addiction research and practice.
This project will apply an innovative method to involve substance misuse patients in psychological therapies, by
asking them to suggest topics to evaluate their treatment. These topics suggested by patients can be written as a
list of personalised items, so-called as patient-generated outcome measures (PGOM). Despite its patient-friendly
features, PGOM’s have never been used in this population, which is what this project aims to overcome
Coupling Between An Optical Phonon and the Kondo Effect
We explore the ultra-fast optical response of Yb_{14}MnSb_{11}, providing
further evidence that this Zintl compound is the first ferromagnetic,
under-screened Kondo lattice. These experiments also provide the first
